Glaucoma and Intraocular Pressure

Glaucoma and Intraocular Pressure

Increased eye pressure can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, but it is often painless and thus goes unnoticed by the patient. Therefore, it is essential to carry out screening and follow-up checks. Eye pressure measurements and screening are particularly important for patients with a positive family history (cases of glaucoma among relatives), because there are genetic factors and therefore an increased risk regarding these diseases.

Besides measuring eye pressure, the comprehensive glaucoma investigation includes performing a visual field test (Octopus perimetry), measuring and documenting the optic nerve (OCT image of papilla, photo), measuring the thickness of the cornea (pachymetry), determining the depth of the anterior chamber (anterior segment OCT image, Pentacam, biometry) and evaluating the anterior chamber angle (gonioscopy). Thus, if glaucoma is detected at an early stage, it is possible to halt the disease with conservative treatment (eye drops, drugs) and surgically (laser treatment or an operation) and stabilize the patient’s eyesight (field of vision). As glaucoma is usually a chronic, lifelong disease, a trusting relationship between the doctor and patient forms the basis for a good treatment.

In our practice, we can offer you a “Glaucoma Clinic”, which covers all the special examinations and treatments (Laser surgery)
