Who Is Andreas F. Borkenstein?
Dr. Andreas F. Borkenstein has built extensive expertise over many years in both conservative and surgical ophthalmology. After completing his medical studies in Graz and Erlangen, his postgraduate training took him to university hospitals in Austria, Germany, and the United States, where he workedclinically as well as scientifically as a Research Fellow. Appointments at renowned institutions such as the University Eye Hospital Heidelberg, the International Vision Correction Research Centre, the David J. Apple Laboratory for Ophthalmic Devices, the Storm Eye Institute, WaldkrankenhausErlangen, and the University Eye Hospital Graz significantly shaped his approach to scientifically grounded medicine, modern intraocular lens design, and precise surgical techniques.
His long-standing work at university hospitals, research institutions, outpatient surgical centers, and private practices enables him to meaningfully combine scientific research, clinical practice, and surgical expertise —ranging from basic research and material analysis to the daily care of patients. Following completion of his specialist training, Dr. Borkenstein worked clinically in both Austria and Germany in parallel, a dual experience that significantly broadened his surgical judgment, diagnostic accuracy, and professional perspective as an ophthalmologist.
Today, his clinical focus lies primarily on intraocular lens implantation in cataract surgery, refractive procedures, glaucoma management, and complex surgical cases involving anterior segment trauma. His scientific work is indexed in PubMed (MEDLINE)of the National Library of Medicine and published in international peer-reviewed journals; his publications have been cited more than 900 times to date. He regularly presents his research at international congresses and hasreceived multiple Best Paper of Session Awards. International scientific collaboration is of particular importance to him, and he maintains close cooperation with colleagues and academic institutions across Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia, as he considers active exchange essential for sustainable knowledge transfer.
In addition, Dr. Borkenstein regularly authors professional articles on a wide range of ophthalmic topics —from glare phenomena in traffic and optimized vision for sports shooters to preventive eye care in children, innovative diagnostic methods, and novel surgical techniques. His involvement inthe development and evaluation of new intraocular lenses, injector systems, viscoelastic materials, and ophthalmic devices —both as an independent medical advisor toleading companies and as an innovator holding multiple patents —feeds directly into his clinical practice, ensuring that patients benefit from the most up-to-date scientific and technological advances.
Despite his extensive experience, Dr. Borkenstein places great importance on remaining connected to his professional roots and frequently emphasizes how formative his training under respected mentors and key opinion leaders has been. He is aware that medicine is constantly evolving and that lifelong learning and continuous professional development are essential to providing the highest standard of care.
From the very beginning of his career, surgery itself has been central to his work. Even after thousands of procedures, he approaches every operation as a unique case, taking the time to care for each patient individually and with the utmost precision and attention.
