Dr. Eva-Maria Borkenstein has built a solid and comprehensive foundation in ophthalmology over many years. Her professional pathled her from the Medical University of Graz through various hospitals to leading ophthalmic centers in the United States. Particularly formative were her years of training at the Wiener Privatklinik, Hanusch Hospital, and the Vienna General Hospital (AKHWien), where she first acquired a broad base in general medicine and plastic surgery under Prof. Dr. Hanno Millesi, before completing her specialist training in ophthalmology at the University Eye Hospital Graz.
An important milestone in her professional development was her Research Fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Universityin the United States—one of the world’s most renowned centers for ophthalmology. After returning to Austria, she worked as a board-certified ophthalmologist at the ophthalmology department of the Styrian Health Insurance Fund (ambulatory care center) before co-founding Borkenstein & Borkensteinin Graz together with Dr. Andreas Borkenstein. There, she now covers the full spectrum of ophthalmology as a specialist. Valent in basic research on anti-VEGF therapies — an area that today plays a key rolein the treatment of macular and retinal diseases. Early surgical training and work in plastic and aesthetic surgery with Prim. Dr. Dagmar Millesiin Vienna also contributed to the precise surgical approach that continues to characterize her work.
